The Royal Chef Challenge: Story

The Royal Chef Challenge was a new program developed last year, inspired by our mandate to create world class competitions in equine, agriculture and food. The Royal Chef Challenge was a great success, spread over the two weekends of The Royal six premium Toronto hotels were battling for bragging rights for the Champion Chef. Chefs were challenged to prepare an appetiser, main and dessert courses using the secret ingredients, which were prize winning products from Royal Competitions such as honey, maple, and pumpkin. The time allotted for preparation of all three courses was one hour. The competition was hosted by celebrities from the food world; Padma Lakshmi, Bob Blumer and Curtis Stone. The Chef Challenge was a great success in showing off the talent of Toronto Chef’s, celebrating local ingredients and providing entertaining programs for our gate crowd.

The Royal on the Road: Chef Challenge 2.0

This year we are planning to expand the competition to include more of Ontario’s top chefs and take the Royal on the road. The premise of this contest is that we will partner with four Fairs from different regions of Ontario, pulling chefs from those regions and celebrating ingredients from those areas.

We will choose four different local restaurants to compete at each of the partnering Fairs. Each challenge will have 3 elements, the preliminaries and then the final competitions. The restaurant’s Chefs will be asked to create one dish in 30 minutes using the secret ingredients (food from the local area/local producer). The winner of each challenge will have a chance to compete in the finals of that region. The overall finals will take place during the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair on the Royal Culinary Stage.
